Do You Need a Podiatrist or a Different Specialist?
Podiatrists are licensed medical professionals who treat disorders of the foot, ankle, and other related leg structures. This covers care for the tissues, joints, as well as skin surrounding the lower limb area. Because of this, many people believe that anything concerning their foot has to be brought to the attention of a podiatrist. But that’s not always the case. There are cases where you might need a different specialist altogether.

Foot or ankle problems that originate from areas like the hip, knee, or lower back are best assessed first by podiatrists, chiropractors, or physiotherapists. It’s important to undergo a thorough evaluation to get the best recommendation as to which specialist you need to work with. A proper diagnosis can remove all confusion.

Make an AppointmentWhat Conditions Can a Podiatrist Treat?
In general, people know podiatrists as doctors that work on anything related to the legs and feet. But which specific cases? Realistically, it depends on the nature of the disease. Some pain or discomfort in the legs and feet are actually caused by damage to the hips or lower back, which means in these situations, the proper specialist should be consulted before a podiatrist steps in. To give you a better idea of the things that a podiatrist can treat, here’s a list of the most common cases handled by our specialists:

- Foot Pain
- Corns
- Calluses
- Blisters
- Heel Pain
- Ankle Pain
- Shin Pain
- Bunions
- Flat Feet
- Aching Legs
- Knee Pain
- Runner’s
- KneeIliotibial Band Syndrome
- Sports injuries
- Hip Pain
- Lower Back Pain
- Dermatological Issues
- Ingrown nails
- Orthodics
- Shin splints
If you’re currently experiencing any of these chronic pains, consider booking a podiatry appointment with our podiatrist. We’ll be more than happy to help you get the relief you need.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral to see a podiatrist?
No, you can book directly. A referral is only needed for a Medicare chronic disease management plan (arranged by your GP), or for certain DVA and workers compensation claims.
Do I really need custom orthotics?
Often not, and we will tell you when that is the case. Orthotics help problems genuinely driven by how force distributes through the foot — persistent plantar fasciitis, posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, some arthritic patterns. Where the cause is strength, tissue capacity or a training error, an orthotic addresses none of it, and a footwear change or a loading programme will do more for less.
How long does heel pain take to resolve?
With an accurate diagnosis and a properly dosed loading programme, most people notice a change within a few weeks. Cases that have run past three months usually stalled for one of three reasons: the diagnosis was wrong, the loading programme was under-dosed, or a driver such as limited ankle dorsiflexion was never addressed.
Do you see NDIS participants?
Yes, for plan-managed and self-managed participants. See our NDIS podiatry page for how the process works and what to have ready.
Can you treat ingrown toenails permanently?
Yes. Where an ingrown nail is deeply embedded, repeatedly infected or has recurred despite conservative care, a partial nail avulsion under local anaesthetic removes the offending edge and treats the matrix so it does not regrow. It takes well under an hour and most people are back in normal shoes within days.
Can I claim on private health insurance?
Yes. HICAPS is available at both clinics, so your rebate is processed at the appointment and you pay only the gap. What you get back depends on your fund and level of extras cover, and on how much of your annual limit you have already used.
Where are you located and when are you open?
Marrickville is at Shop 1/20-22 Station St and is open seven days. Wetherill Park is at Unit 2/442-446 Victoria St and is open six days — we are closed there on Thursdays. Bookings are taken separately for each clinic.
