Hurstville Podiatry

Thickened, discoloured or crumbling nails, stubborn callus, corns and cracked heels are the bread and butter of podiatry — and the problems most often mistreated at home.

Podiatry for Hurstville patients at Hyper Health Marrickville

Podiatry at Hyper Health is delivered by Ray Nguyen, whose practice centres on thorough gait analysis and lower-limb assessment. Ray holds a Bachelor of Health Science and a Master of Podiatric Medicine, and has worked across hospitals, aged care and multidisciplinary allied health settings.

Appointments for Hurstville patients are seen at our Marrickville clinic at Shop 1/20-22 Station St, open seven days. Because we also have chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapists on site, problems that turn out to sit above the foot do not require a separate referral and a three-week wait — we can bring a colleague in directly.

What an initial appointment involves:

  • A history covering your symptoms, footwear, activity and any relevant medical conditions
  • A physical assessment of joint range, strength, skin and circulation
  • Gait analysis, walking and running where relevant
  • A working diagnosis explained in plain terms, and what it means for you
  • A treatment plan with a realistic timeframe, and the cost of anything recommended stated up front

We are registered for private health rebates with HICAPS on site, and we see NDIS participants — see our NDIS podiatry page for how that works.

Fungal nails take patience and a diagnosis

Not every discoloured nail is fungal. Trauma, psoriasis, and simple nail dystrophy all produce similar appearances, and antifungal treatment does nothing for any of them.

Where fungal infection is confirmed, treatment is a long game — nails grow slowly, and a big toenail takes nine to twelve months to fully replace. Topical treatment works best when the nail is thinned first so the medication can reach the nail bed, which is a large part of what the appointment is for.

We will also talk about the reinfection sources most people miss: shoes, shower floors, and the nail clippers themselves.

Corns, callus and cracked heels

Callus is your skin responding to pressure. Debriding it gives immediate relief, but unless the pressure source is identified it returns on a predictable cycle.

So we do both: remove the callus properly with a sterile blade, then work out what is causing the pressure — a footwear issue, a bony prominence, a gait pattern — and address that. Cracked heels are treated the same way, with the addition of a urea-based emollient that actually penetrates.
