How Does Massage Therapy Work?
Massage therapy has long been recognised as a powerful tool for promoting relaxation and relieving various types of pain. With its ability to target specific areas of tension and discomfort, massage therapy offers a holistic approach to enhancing overall well-being. By employing various techniques and applying the right amount of pressure, skilled massage therapists can effectively alleviate muscle tension, reduce stress, and promote deep relaxation.
During a massage therapy session, the therapist uses their hands, fingers, elbows, and sometimes even props to manipulate the body's soft tissues. This hands-on approach allows them to target specific muscle groups or areas of pain, providing immediate relief and promoting overall relaxation. By employing long, sweeping strokes and kneading techniques, massage therapists work to release tension and improve blood circulation, allowing for increased oxygen and nutrient delivery to the muscles.

Massage therapy not only helps with physical pain relief but also plays a significant role in reducing mental and emotional stress. Massage therapists stimulate the production of endorphins through gentle manipulation of the body's muscles – the body’s natural painkillers and mood enhancers.
As a result, clients often experience a profound sense of relaxation and improved mental clarity. Moreover, massage therapy has been found to reduce the levels of stress hormones such as cortisol, leading to a decrease in anxiety and an overall uplifted mood.

Frequently asked questions
Is remedial massage claimable on private health insurance?
Remedial massage is claimable with most funds where your extras cover includes it, and HICAPS is on site so the rebate is processed at your appointment. Relaxation massage is generally not claimable.
What is the difference between remedial and relaxation massage?
Remedial massage is targeted at a specific area of pain, restriction or overload and is assessed and adjusted as it goes. Relaxation massage is a full-body treatment aimed at downregulation rather than tissue change. If you are not sure, book remedial and describe what you are dealing with.
Should massage be painful?
Effective soft tissue work can be uncomfortable, but it should never be something you have to brace against or hold your breath through. Pain that makes you tense up works against the treatment — tell your therapist and they will adjust the pressure.
How often should I book?
It depends entirely on why you are coming. For an acute problem, more frequently at first and then tapering. For training recovery, timed around your heaviest weeks. For general maintenance, whatever interval keeps you feeling good — there is no clinical requirement to come weekly.
Can I have massage on the same day as chiropractic or physio?
Yes, and it is often a useful combination. Mention it when you book so the appointments can be scheduled back to back.
Can I claim on private health insurance?
Yes. HICAPS is available at both clinics, so your rebate is processed at the appointment and you pay only the gap. What you get back depends on your fund and level of extras cover, and on how much of your annual limit you have already used.
Where are you located and when are you open?
Marrickville is at Shop 1/20-22 Station St and is open seven days. Wetherill Park is at Unit 2/442-446 Victoria St and is open six days — we are closed there on Thursdays. Bookings are taken separately for each clinic.
